Van Gogh’s Montmajour, Oil on Board, 20×24, 2020

Back to copying “masterworks” this week. I didn’t do a whole lot of painting in August for several reasons, but this project helped me dive back in after the long break. This is my second (maybe third?) attempt at van Gogh. My idea this time around was to take one of van Gogh’s drawings (“The Rock of Montmajour with Pine Trees” 1888) and make it into a painting using elements of his style. The sky I borrowed more from his painting “Wheat Stack under Cloudy Sky” 1889, however, added the storm to it as I imagined an ominous ode to Vincent’s last days. The palette I morphed together from “Rocks with Oak Tree” 1888 and “Olive Trees” 1889.
