Piet’s Tree (after Piet Mondrian’s The Gray Tree), Oil on Board, 12×16, 2020

Chris’s latest assignment is to copy “masterworks” such as the Mona Lisa. Artists have been studying via copying masterworks for eons and it does give you the opportunity to get in the weeds, looking at individual brushstrokes. I have always liked this painting from Piet Mondrian. Ironically, at the time Mondrian was studying cubist painters like Picasso–so this is an artist studying an artist studying an artist. My version is accurate, although less spontaneous for obvious reasons.
