Brie Varney is an oil painter who uses geometric shapes and lines to explore landscapes and still life subject matter. Her “stained glass” approach is locally known and is consistent with her need to rationalize and simplify the world.
Brie’s work has been exhibited in several galleries throughout the Colorado Springs area. Her artistic influences include Vincent van Gogh, Jacoba van Heemskerck, Larisa Aukon, and Piet Mondrian.
Growing up in Northern Virginia, she started drawing and painting as a child. Later she explored black and white photography and figure drawing. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Art & Design from North Carolina State University and has studied under local artist Chris Alvarez. She moved to Colorado Springs in 2006 where she worked as an electrical engineer for over 13 years until she left to pursue oil painting more seriously.
Brie currently lives in Colorado Springs with her husband and three children. When she isn’t painting, she enjoys distance swimming, reading, hiking, playing ice hockey, and a good gin and tonic.
