This painting started as an exercise from Chris Alvarez. The exercise was to paint 5 paintings starting with just black and white, then adding burnt sienna, then yellow ochre, then cad red, then finally ultramarine blue. So instead of painting 5 different paintings, I decided to tape off 5 sections of a long one. This made for a good exercise in palette organization and studying values, but the final painting was less than attractive…so I decided to paint over it to make it all in full color. I really like how the sky turned out. The reference photo is from Garden of the Gods in Colorado.
